Use 10111 to call police

The 10111 call is free from landlines

WITH people having telephonic difficulty when contacting the police station, Brighton Beach SAPS urges locals to dial 10111 and to avoid making hoax calls.

Station media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said they had received complaints from community members who were having difficulty communicating telephonically with Brighton Beach police station.

“Brighton Beach police station uses a device that works on a relaying system which will continue ringing the extension until such becomes available, or alternatively it will switch to voicemail.

Should you experience difficulty in communicating with the station, it is recommended that you dial the 10111 SAPS emergency call centre. The operator will be able to contact the station via radio communication and relay your request for police assistance.

Your call will be recorded for record keeping purposes. The operator will also be able to contact the duty officer for assistance should his/her call to the station fail,” said Capt Le Roux.

She added that the 10111 call is free from landlines, but not from a mobile phones but mobile service providers have an emergency service number (112) which can be used for various emergency services.

“Those who wish to use these services are cautioned not to use them under false pretences (hoax calls), as this can result in the service provider blocking your phone and you can be criminally prosecuted under the Telecommunications Act.

When making your call ensure you speak clearly, provide the physical address where the emergency exists and the type of emergency.”
