R15m worth of drugs seized in container terminal raid

The drugs were hidden in cargo bags which were mixed with food boxes.

A WHOPPING R15-million worth of drugs were seized during an intelligence driven operation carried out by Hawks, SARS and Durban Harbour ORS members at the Durban container terminal on Tuesday, 6 June.

The members recovered some 60 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, also known as tik. The drugs were hidden in cargo bags which were mixed with food boxes.

The street value of the drugs was about R15-million. Although the drug bust is a huge accomplishment for the authorities, it about half the value of the harbour’s October 2014 R28.5 million cocaine bust by police and SARS officials.

No arrests have been made and Hawks members are following positive leads.
