Schools found to be drug, weapon-free zones

"Schools are supposed to be the safest place for learners and educators and the police are trying the best to commit themselves to that," Lt Gumede.

WENTWORTH and Merebank schools recovered a clean bill after Wentworth SAPS vispol and social crime prevention members conducted school searches on May 13.

The searches which was led by vispol commander, Major Khumalo were conducted at Fairvale Secondary and Merebank High School. “The search was also part of a project under school safety that assists in ensuring that our schools are safe environments,” said Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Lt Mbuso Gumede.

Different classes were searched in the presence of teachers with the main focus being on school bags which may conceal drugs or weapons. “Everything went well and it shows that pupils heeding the call to stay away from drugs or any other illegal  things that detract their attention away from their education,” added Lt Gumede.

The search was welcomed by both Fairvale Secondary school principal Mr Seidle , and Merebank High School principal Mr Timothy. “Schools are supposed to be the safest place for learners and educators and the police are trying the best to commit themselves to that,” Lt Gumede.
