NEWS JUST IN: Robbers vent frustration by shooting at freezer

The matter is being investigated by Wentworth SAPS.

SHOTS were fired on Friday evening, 20 May when a supermarket in Wentworth was invaded by six armed men.

It is alleged that six criminals entered the store and disarmed the security guard by taking his gun away. Some of the robbers held up the staff at gunpoint while the rest dragged customers to the floor. “One of the suspects tried to force open the till but failed,” said Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Lt Mbuso Gumede.

Shots were fired inside the store, shattering the freezer glass but no-one was injured. Leaving with nothing, the armed men fled the scene only to be stopped by unknown people outside the store. A shoot-out ensued between them . Three vehicles were struck by stray bullets. Bystanders who heard the shoot-out ran for safety and fortunately escaped uninjured . The men jumped into a getaway car and drove off before the police arrived.

Police searched the area and blocked exits but the six men made a clean getaway. No arrests were made. The matter is being investigated by Wentworth SAPS. “We appeal to any witnesses to contact us on 031-451-6240/6241/6242, Crime stop on 086-0010-111 or 10111,” said Lt Gumede.
