Beware as criminals plague bridge users

Find alternative routes which are safer or walk in groups

REGULAR users of what has become known as the Hullets bridge in Clairwood are warned by Montclair police to be cautious while walking in the area following reports of two murders and robberies.

On a Tuesday night , 10 May at about 8.30pm, a robbery occurred on the South Coast Road bridge when a man and his friend from Clairwood were walking home. They were approached by three knife-welding men. They were searched by the criminals who took cash and cellphones before they fled under the bridge.

The victims’ luck changed the next day when they saw the same men who robbed them walk past them. “They pursued the criminals and apprehended one of them. They called Montclair police to arrest the man,” added Montclair SAPS communications officer, Lt Dereck Vijiam.

Earlier, a woman’s body was found under the Hullets Bridge on Tuesday, 3 May. The discovery of the raped and murdered woman’s body was made by a passer-by. A week later, on Tuesday, 10 May another murder occurred when a man was found to have sustained multiple fatal stab wounds.

Due to the vagrants that use the area as a thoroughfare, members of the public are urged to be careful and try not to carry many valuables with them. Members of the public are urged to find alternative routes which are safer or walk in groups. “I advise them to avoid the area after dark, it is a dangerous place,” said Lt Vijiam.
