Pupils speak their minds about crime

Pupils participate in creative writing competition.

0.THE annual Brighton Beach SAPS grade 8 crime induction programme saw four local pupils awarded for their contribution.

The programme, hosted by media officer Captain Louise Le Roux educated pupils on, among other things, criminal offences and the consequences of becoming involved in crime.

“The transition from junior primary to high school can be a stressful period for the young pupils, therefore coping mechanisms were also provided to help them adapt,” said Capt Le Roux.

Along with the educational aspects of the programme was a creative writing competition. Pupils were invited to write essays of 150 words or more on the ways in which crime affects them in school and if they think the police should be involved in school safety.

On Monday, 18 April, the winners, Matthew Green from Grosvenor Boys High School, Asanda Gumede from Bluff Christian Academy, Simosenkosi Mncube from Durban Academy and Noluthando Majola from Grosvenor Girls High School, were awarded certificates of achievement and Mr Price gift vouchers.

“The majority of the pupils indicated they would appreciate more police presence in their schools, such as foot patrols, stop and search of school bags and crime talks. Crimes that are of concern for them were listed as theft crime, followed by bullying and then banned substance distribution,” said Capt Le Roux.

She thanks the principals and staff for supporting the initiative and the pupils who wrote the essays.

“I encourage pupils to actively participate in future creative writing or art competitions hosted by the Brighton Beach SAPS division media monitoring team, as it proved a platform for the youth to express their opinions and showcase their creative skills.”
