Freedom day event teaches children to arm themselves with education

Education is a weapon and we should use it to rise above our challenges

FREEDOM DAY, which South Africa celebrated on Wednesday, 27 April, was celebrated in style thanks to the endless talents displayed by children at the Ningizimu Special School on Thursday, 21 April.

Other schools, including Mason Lincoln Special School, Inanda (Bright future) Special school and Scelulwazi Primary School joined in the celebrations, with their own talented pupils who showcased their skills in scout drills, singing and music.

The soccer field was adorned with a sea of South African flags as the proud children waved them high. For deputy principal and co-ordinator of the event, Zethu Mkhwanazi, the celebration was a great opportunity to teach the born frees about the significance of Freedom Day. “Today we taught the children about liberation and how daily challenges such as crime and diseases could affect their freedom. We want them to understand that education is a weapon and we should use it to rise above our challenges,”she added.

Specials guests from Montclair police, department of transport and the department of education attended the event which was graced with special performances by Robert Lewis-Walker and Scottish pipe band.

The special day ended appropriately with the singing of the nation anthem and the lowering of the flag.
