No more traffic fine reprieve

The decision was made by the director of public prosecutions

MOTORISTS’ fines must be paid in full from the beginning of April unless a reduction is approved by a prosecutor.

The 50 percent reduction of fines offered by the municipality since its 7 December 2012 resolution for old outstanding fines, or if fines were paid within 30 days of being issued and if the offender is not in contempt of court, has been annulled.

The decision was made by the director of public prosecutions and going forward, traffic fines can only be reduced by a prosecutor.

According to the municipality, fine reductions will only be considered upon receipt of written representation from the offender, showing good cause, in line with section 57(4) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

“It is important the public is made aware of this change. It must be noted that what is happening is not extraordinary, these changes are in line with the Constitution,” said city manager, Sibusiso Sithole.
