Everett’s share 50 years of wedded bliss

They went on their first date in 1959 and seven years later, they were married

BLUFF sweethearts, Tommy and Margaret Everett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday, 2 April.

Both have lived on the Bluff for about six decades and first met at what was then Grosvenor High School, where they were the first class to matriculate before the boys’ school was built.

They went on their first date in 1959 and seven years later, they were married at St Margaret’s Church on the Bluff with the reception at the Harcourt Hotel in Marine Drive.

In 1968 they moved into their Bluff home which they designed and built themselves. There they raised their two children, Bernadine and Gerard and have remained to this day.

Reflecting on what has kept them together for so long, they said they shared in all their interests and have been patient with each other.

Before they retired, Margaret worked as a primary school teacher and taught at Glenardle, Brighton Beach and Fynnland schools and Tommy was in the transport industry.

Now, Margaret, who is president of the Women’s Friendship Guild, delights in gardening. She loves growing anthirriums and does flower arranging and embroidery. Tommy designs, builds and flies model aircraft and grows vegetables hydroponically. Together, the pair enjoy camping and try to go to the Kruger National Park as often as they can.

They thoroughly enjoyed the lunch for their anniversary, organised by Bernadine, which saw family and friends gather to honour their 50 years of marriage.
