Public meeting on Monday, 21 March.

ISSUES relating to the livelihoods and health of local residents will be discussed at a public meeting to be hosted by the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) on Monday, 21 March.

Topics that will be discussed include Transnet and fishing and farming; the Clairwood Racecourse; Durban Dig Out Port; expansion of the petro chemical industries; Clairwood community and the Back of Port plans; trucking; containers and logistics; biodiversity; endangered and indigenous flora and fauna; residential homes and people’s quality of life.

“We intend recording the grievances and community’s concerns around the various issues and see how they can shape not only shape SDCEA’s campaigns for environmental and social justice but also to present those views in a collated document to President Jacob Zuma,” said SDCEA environmental project officer, Priya Pillay.

“It’s time for communities to take their place and voice their challenges to fight against unsustainable development and a government that is profit-driven and neglects the most fundamental and basic human right, that is life.”

The meeting will be held at the Denis Hurley Centre in Durban from 9am to 2pm. Call SDCEA on 031-461-1991 or Desmond D’Sa on 083-982-6939 for information.
