Buddy pledge aims to squash bullying

Local policeman hopes to reduce bullying.

BRIGHTON Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux is on a mission to highlight the scourge of bullying and rally community members to take a stand.

Through her ‘Buddy Pledge’ campaign, Capt Le Roux hopes to educate people and create a show of solidarity among residents who will stand against bullying.

“Bullying in its various forms has become a daily occurrence all over the world. It occurs in any context when humans interact with each other,” she said.

To combat bullying, she has embarked on a multifaceted campaign. The first phase saw the construction of a static display at the police station with facts on bullying for people to view.

Part two is the Buddy Pledge, through which she hopes to garner 2,000 signatures in her ‘Be a buddy, not a bully’ campaign. eThekwini Municipality inner south cluster senior management, including the Brighton Beach SAPS station commander and management have already signed the pledge, along with tenants and management of local shopping malls.

The pledge is open to anyone to sign and Capt Le Roux will be available at the police station on Wednesday, 16 March from 5pm to 7pm and Thursday, 17 March from 11am to 2pm to receive pledges.

The final phase of the campaign will see the captain visit local schools during the second term to educate pupils.
