Floating book fair to dock in Durban

Outreach for local communities.

THE world’s biggest floating book fair will reach Durban’s shores next week, bringing with it education and upliftment for local communities.

The Logos Hope, which travels the world, packed with volunteers from more than 50 nations, will berth in the Durban Harbour for two and a half weeks from 17 March to 3 April.

On board more than 5,000 book titles will be on sale at low prices, bringing opportunities for literacy and education.

The volunteers on board the vessel also provide support to local communities through outreach programmes. On their stop in Durban, they will assist a local rural school with the construction of a library. Medical check-ups will also be given in some areas, with free glasses provided to those in need.

“If people can’t see or read, what is the point of giving them a book? Education is important and we will be here to provide sustainable assistance,” said Andy Law, a member of the ship’s advanced preparation team.

Nathan Le Roux discusses the logistics of the operation, while Brandon Kemp and Lyte Gatchalian look on.

The purpose of the crew is to bring knowledge, hope and help to the countries they visit and they achieve this through partnerships with local NGOs to ensure their work continues long after they’ve set sail for distant shores.

From Thursday, 17 March the ship and its crew will host a variety of activities alongside the book fair. Entry is R5 and free for children under 12 (adult supervision is required). On Mondays, Fridays and Sundays the ship is open from 3pm to 9.30pm and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays it is open from 10am to 9.30pm.
