Burglar bagged after fleeing police

Police track down and arrest wanted thief.

A MAN wanted for at least three housebreakings was arrested by Brighton Beach SAPS officers on Sunday, 21 February in Clairwood.

While on patrol on Pine Road in the afternoon of Saturday, 20 February, Brighton Beach SAPS crime prevention members saw a man walking along the side of the road. When the man saw the police car, he started running away and Warrant officer JJ Sonnekus and gave chase on foot.

He recognised the man as someone he had arrested before for housebreaking and theft. He was unable to catch the man, but he found a plastic bag with two mobile phones, a tablet, two digital cameras and a watch in it that the man had dropped as he fled. The items had been stolen during a housebreaking in Kiora Road on the Bluff on 16 February.

Brighton Beach SAPS management information centre’s Constable Garth Mei said the man was out on bail for three counts of housebreaking committed during 2013 and 2015.

On Sunday, 21 February W/O Sonnekus and his team began a search for the man in Clairwood. Near where they saw him the previous day, they checked an outbuilding and found the man sitting inside with the front door open.

When he realised his building had been surrounded, the man surrendered. He was arrested for housebreaking and theft and appeared in Durban Regional Court where bail was denied and he was remanded to Westville prison.

Brighton Beach SAPS management commends the officers for the arrest and recovery of the stolen property.
