Remove illegal signs, urges councillor

Help clean up your neighbourhood.

HELP clean your suburb by removing illegal signage, urges ward 66 councillor, Duncan Du Bois.

At a workshop on the municipality’s new outdoor signage bylaw, Du Bois raised concerns on the propagation of illegal, informal signs.

“Signs and signage that has not been approved by the metro are a form of litter,” said Du Bois, who added that a distinction needed to be made between formal and informal signage.

“While the bylaw on outdoor advertising is highly detailed, it focuses only on formal signage and has little to say about informal signage. What concerns ratepayers is the proliferation of informal signage that is found affixed to traffic light poles, street lamp poles and other metro infrastructure.”

These signs are usually illegal because they do not bear the dome sticker issued by the municipality.

“This illegal signage therefore constitutes a form of litter that needs to be removed. Unfortunately, the chances of metro officials actually carrying out that task are about zero. The workshop was told there is a staff of only six officials in the entire metro tasked with removing illegal signage.

The solution, therefore, is quite simple – just as anybody is welcome to pick up trash and place it in a bin, so anyone is entitled to remove illegal signage,” he said.
