Road, rail safety competition winners named

Pupils rewarded for participation.

THE second South Durban rail and road safety awareness competition came to a close last month, with local pupils being educated and rewarded.

A campaign by Prasa, the South Durban business sector and eThekwini Municipality saw a roadshow visit 20 primary and 10 high schools in high accident zones in Wentworth, Clairwood, Merebank, Lamontville and Umlazi in mid-2015.

The aim of the roadshow was to educate pupils on safe road and rail usage in order to reduce the number of children injured or killed.

Prasa, police, Engen, Mondi, Sapref and eThekwini transport authority officials spoke to the pupils and highlighted the dangers. Since 2013, more than 600 children under the age of 14 were involved in road or rail accidents in the area.

At the Prasa Lounge at Durban railway station last month, the Rail and Road Safety Awareness Poster and Essay Competition prize-giving saw pupils rewarded for their participation.

The poster competition theme for the primary schools was ‘not on the rail or roadway’, while the theme for the essays was ‘road and rail safety’.

ML Sultan St Marys Primary School’s Kashvin Annamalai won first prize in the poster competition, with fellow school pupil, Saiyuri Chetty in second place and Settlers Primary School’s Raoul in third.

In the essay competition, winners were Sphe Dube, Sbahle Vundla and Bayanda Ngubo, all from Ogwini High School.

Merit awards were also given to the 40 other pupils in each category.
