A TRUCK driver who thought he would get away with crime, was cut short when Montclair SAPS investigators uncovered the truth behind his false hijacking allegations.

On 2 January, the driver who was transporting R160,000 worth of rice, reported that he was hijacked. The docket was assigned to D/Cst Habeeb from the Montclair detectives unit for further investigation.D/Cst Habeeb and members of crime intelligence interviewed the driver and his assistant.

The story given by the truck driver and the assistant led the detective to believe that facts did not add up. After thorough investigation it was later revealed the truck driver was never hijacked, rather him and his assistant had taken the load of rice and sold it to a Pakistani national for an undisclosed amount. The crime intelligence team followed a few leads that took them to Hammersdale where they recovered R5,100 and a truck radio.

They were charged with defeating the ends of justice.

“Montclair SAPS management commends the members for the arrests and recoveries,” said communications officer, W/O Poobalan Marimuthu.
