Wentworth Victim Centre hosts Christmas party for children

"Some don't know what Christmas is or what it's like to feel special. To see the smiles on their faces was our reward."

THE children of Wentworth were in for treat when members of the Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre (WVFC) with the Wentworth SAPS hosted a Christmas party on Monday, 7 December. Some 250 children who had been assisted by the WVFC during the course of the year, attended the function and received gifts from Father Christmas and special guests from the Department of Justice KZN regional office.

Speakers on behalf of the justice department, Advocate Ryan Moodley commended the work done by the WVFC. “We are always looking for an opportunity to be a part of events such as this. We addressed the children on their rights and to caution them, especially during the festive season, to stay away from any possible crime that is prevalent in the community. We also educated the children on sexual predators and all forms of sexual abuse,” said Advocate Moodley. The department of Justice members distributed bags and stationery.

The day was abuzz with excitement as the children lined up to meet Santa who handed out personlised presents to each child. Jenny Gomes from WVFC said that it’s a good feeling to give the children the day, knowing that they are making a difference in their lives, “Some don’t know what Christmas is or what it’s like to feel special. To see the smiles on their faces was our reward. The Christmas party also ties in with the 16 Days of non-violence against women and children. But we believe we should go further than 16 days. We believe that for 365 days, if we can make a difference in one child’s life a day, we can motivate the community to be alert and see the need in the community,” said Gomes. She thanks the justice department, Toy Story and ABM SDB for making the party a success. All toys were donated thanks to schools and sponsors that worked with WVFC.

Warrent Officer Ballan Reddi from the Wentworth social crime prevention unit said the day was a success and he thanks all those who took part. “It is humbling to see the happy faces of the children, and we encourage other organisations or members of the community to add more smiles to little faces.”
