Man confesses to Merebank murder

The police condemns the act of violence against women and children and will have zero tolerance

A DRUNKEN brawl ended in tragedy when a 60-year-old woman was found bludgeoned to death  on Tuesday, December 1.

A motorist was driving on Tanjore Road when he heard screaming from a nearby bush and immediately contacted the police. When members of Wentworth SAPS arrived at the scene, near Cuttings Beach they found a man at the crime scene holding a wooden plank. He allegedly confessed to the crime.

According to the 56-year-old man, him and the victim were coming back from a night of heavy drinking. They began to argue when she accused him of cheating. “In a fit of rage he attacked her and hit her multiple times, causing major wounds to her head.

When the officers on call arrived at the scene, she was still breathing but shortly died at the scene. She was taken to the mortuary and a case of murder is been investigated, ” said Lt Gumede, communications officer for Wentworth SAPS. After thoroughly combing the scene, numerous objects-believed to be used as weapons-were taken in for evidence.

In light of 16 Days of Activism, the murder has left the community in dismay as violence against women is a harsh truth that they have to face daily. “The police condemns the act of violence against women and children and will have zero tolerance,” added Lt Gumede.

Member of the Wentworth Victim Friendly Unit, Clint Leverton said that women abuse in society is still prevalent today. “Far too many women still keep quiet about the abuse that they suffer by the hands of men who claim to love them. For many its embarrassing to come out and speak about the abuse. I find it appalling that in the 16 days of activism we stlil have such grievous deeds and acts of violence still being practised against women and children.

May the soul of the deceased woman rest in peace and 16 days is not enough

-365 days of activism is what is needed and laws need to be more stringent and much harsher sentences must be imposed,” added Clint.
