Jail time for heroin

TWO South Durban men found in possession of heroin in August have received prison sentences for their crimes in recent weeks.

A 31-year-old Bluff man was searched by Brighton Beach SAPS crime prevention member, Constable Sabelo Bhengu on Archary Road in Clairwood.

Cst Bhengu saw two men acting suspiciously. One of the men had concealed two straws of heroin in his socks. He appeared in Durban Regional Court on 3 November and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

An 18-year-old from Lamontville was netted during operations in Sastri Road, Clairwood when Brighton Beach SAPS crime prevention’s Cons Ntando Qwabe saw him drop something. Cons Qwabe found a straw of heroin had been thrown to the floor.

On 4 November, the teen was sentenced to six months in prison in the Durban Regional Court, with a further 12 months suspended for five years as he was a first-time offender. “Brighton Beach SAPS management commends the members on the arrests.

We acknowledge Brighton Beach SAPS detective services’ Cst Magugu Mkhize who ensured the cases were well prepared for presentation to the court, thus ensuring the convictions,” said communications officer, Capt Louise Le Roux.
