Bluff is city’s safest suburb

Clairwood, unfortunately, is blighted by crime

WARD 66 councillor, Duncan Du Bois is pleased with local crime statistics as the Bluff fares well when the figures were released recently.

“Comparisons between suburbs in terms of rates generated and spent often result in unfair conclusions as to how the Bluff fares. Although crime is widespread, scrutiny of the recently published national crime stats shows that the Bluff is the safest suburb in the eThekwini Metro – a fact which critics of the Bluff would do well to appreciate,” said Du Bois.

“With over 8,500 households on the Bluff, house burglary is undoubtedly the first concern of property owners. Compared to Amanzimtoti, Berea, Hillcrest, Durban North, Pinetown, Westville and Umbilo, house burglaries for the Bluff policing area are the lowest. Hillcrest, despite or perhaps because of its affluence, has a house burglary rate more than twice that of the Bluff.”

He believes the Bluff’s statistics would be lower if not for Clairwood, which is in the jurisdiction of the Brighton Beach SAPS.

“Clairwood, unfortunately, is blighted by crime.

Property owners on the Bluff ought to applaud Brighton Beach SAPS station commander, Colonel Carel Grobler and his team of dedicated police officers along with the Community Policing Forum chaired by Carl Knauff for their tireless and unswerving efforts to police our area and to combat crime.

Also worthy of recognition in this regard are the efforts of the members of Community Orientated Policing who provide excellent grassroots surveillance and vigilance for Bluff residents.”
