YWP cyclist dedicates Shova ride to cancer fighter

Local man honours his friend.

WHILE his friend battles cancer, a Yellowwood Park cyclist battled the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic in her honour on Sunday, 18 October.

Twenty-nine-year-old Trevor Hardouin used his fourth Amashova cycle to raise awareness of cancer and specifically to show support for 45-year-old Tracey Massey Hicks.

Following a diagnosis of breast cancer in February 2014, Hicks underwent six months of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation and was in remission. Two months ago she was told the cancer had returned and had spread to her neck, spine, liver, sternum and ribs and she is undergoing more gruelling chemotherapy.

“The reason I chose to ride for Tracey is not only because she has been like family to me for many years, but she is also a very strong woman who won’t give up. She never complains or says, ‘why did this happen to me?’ and is still outgoing, happy and full of laughter. It’s like nothing is wrong. She also uses her time as a volunteer at the Cansa Association, talking to other people with the same condition,” said Hardouin.

After he completed the race, Hardouin gave his medal to Tracey as a token of appreciation for her bravery and acknowledgement of his support.

“This race was very significant for me. I persevered through the race and handing my medal over to her serves as an emblem of her perseverance through her illness. It was also an encouragement for her to keep on fighting which seems fitting as we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness this month.”
