Two tons of litter cleared

Local clean-up nets bags of trash.

ABOUT 2,000kg of rubbish was collected in the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office’s local clean-up for the International Coastal Clean (ICC) in September.

Along with the cleansing and solid waste and parks and beach maintenance departments and Ezemvelo KZN, the SDB ABM hosted the clean-up at the Isipingo Estuary and Cuttings Beach.

Walking the coastline with them were local schools, about 450 community volunteers and Westville prisoners.

“Statistics tallied up to 550 bags of litter collected, 170 fishing rods and 115 personal hygiene items, which resulted in about two tons of rubbish altogether,” said SDB ABM’s Sphindile Mbatha.

According to Mbatha, eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo said of the clean-up: “Thank-you for coming and braving the weather to help us help clean our city. You’ve all done a very good job. Let it not be a once off thing, but it must be an everyday habit. Let’s take responsibility for our city because we want to be the cleanest city worldwide.”
