Put brakes on driver’s license corruption

Where there is money, corruption will often accompany it.

EDITOR – It came as no shock to read the article by Driven to Vent in the South Coast Sun (25 September) regarding bribery by examiners at various testing centres.

Sadly, the issue starts with certain driving school instructors who have connections with the examiners.

Where there is money, corruption will often accompany it. As a local driving instructor, I pride myself in preparing my learners to drive safely and considerately and to be able to pass their driving test fairly. Sadly, this is not the case with all driving instructors in Toti and other areas – I am aware of certain individuals who will offer a bribe. Not every instructor or examiner is corrupt. I applaud those who retain their integrity and do things fairly and in the proper manner.

To those learners who are willing to buy your licences, know that your actions contribute to the high death rate on our roads. When you buy your licence, all you do is show your poor character and encourage others to follow suit.

Perhaps if people spoke up when instructors and examiners asked for a bribe, the issue would be easier to deal with. May I suggest that if you have been a victim of bribery, you contact Captain Ngcobo at the Winklespruit Testing Grounds or contact the local driver instructor association and play your part in lessening this corrupt practise.
