Pupils tour Durban’s green lungs

Local pupils are excited to learn about trees.

IN celebration of Arbour Month, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office hosted school tours aimed at improving greening activities.

During September, the SDB AMB office took pupils and teachers on tours through the Durban Botanic Gardens and eThekwini Municipality Urban Management Zone (UMZ) building.

Pupils from the SDB were encouraged to participate in greening activities within their communities; to promote sustainable livelihoods and good waste management practises; to increase their knowledge on the topic and to urge teachers to teach about indigenous knowledge and sustainability.

“Thank you so much to the SDB for inspiring us to take care of the environment, and to find innovative ways to manage our waste. Hopefully our pupils will go home and plant a tree in their gardens,” said Msizi Dube Primary School teacher, Mrs Ngcobo.

“We are happy to have participated in these initiatives aimed at raising

awareness about the importance of planting trees and using simple ways of

creating food gardens and other plants in general. This will go a long way in changing people’s attitudes and contributing towards climate change mitigation strategies,” said SDB ABM municipal services manager, Sifiso Xulu.
