Positive discipline focus for ECD workshop

WECDF learns non-punitive measures.

SAVE the Children continued its effort to empower teachers and children in the early childhood development (ECD) sector in Wentworth through a positive discipline training workshop.

With ECD centres in Wentworth already renowned for their work to improve the lives of youngsters, further care was taken to ensure this continues through an interactive workshop.

ECD practitioners were taught non-punitive measures to discipline children in an effort to create a safe space for children to learn self-discipline, responsibility, mutual respect and problem-solving skills.

“Positive discipline focuses on discipline that teaches young children to feel a sense of connection and belonging. It is kind, encouraging and firm at the same time and it is effective in the long-term. It teaches important social and life skills,” said Save the Children’s programme officer for training, Adelaide Mkhomazi.

Participant, Agnes Mazibuko from Kool Kats added: “We have learnt the awesome magic of positive discipline and new ways to effectively handle discipline with young children and also to work with our parents, guardians and the families of our children. We have been empowered on effectively dealing with the simple challenges of young children hitting each other. The training allowed us to go back to the basics of character education and how to use encouragement to motivate positive change. We are grateful to Save the Children.”
