4 not-to-be-missed events in KZN this weekend

Take a weekend road trip to different parts of the Kingdom of the Zulu

If you’re not so thrilled at the arrival of the swarms of (no, not the sardines) inland visitors to the coast, why not head out into the nether regions of the province, to ensure you get some much needed R&R?

Here’s a list of four events taking place this weekend, which will make the road trip worthwhile:

·        The 2015 Polocrosse World Cup action is playing out at Durban’s Shongweni Club. The tournament starts today, Friday, 3 July until Sunday 5 July; thereafter the action resumes from 10 to 12 July with the semifinals and finals. Hosts and defending World Cup champions, South Africa, welcomes the world’s top seven teams from the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  Polocrosse games take place between 9am and 2pm daily. Visit www.polocrosse.co.za for VIP tickets; general admission tickets can be purchased on the day at a cost of R20 per person, entrance for children under the age of 12 is free.

·        If dressing to the nines is your thing, there’s no better place to flaunt it than the Vodacom Durban July which takes place at Greyville Course on Saturday, 4 July. The 119th running of the VDJ will attract a capacity crowd for a day of fashion, thrilling horse-racing, socialising and celebrity spotting against a nautical backdrop set by the theme “The Captain’s Table”.

The excitement will reach fever pitch shortly before 4:30pm when the expanded field of 18 runners thunders down the home straight in an effort to be first past the finishing post and then led into the winners enclosure to a hero’s welcome.

·        The Tropika Ballito Pro Music Concerts Powered by 5FM, Crush Nightclub and Big Night Out are bringing together SA’s top musical acts to rock out for three nights, ending on Saturday, 4 July with non-stop music. The concerts are free of charge and open to all members of the public on Salt Rock beach.

·        Drive down to Margate’s inaugural “Hook ,Vine & Craft Beer Fest” set to take place on Margate Beach from 3 to 5 July. Forming part of the KZN South Coast’s ever-popular Sardine Festival, this event looks set to tick all the right boxes for the festival-loving public. This is a seafood, wine and craft beer festival, with live entertainment. It opens 10am till late. Tasting tickets cost R35.
