N2 shoot-out nets two injured men

Police involved in shoot-out on N2.

TWO men were shot and arrested in a shoot-out with police on the N2 near Higginson Highway on Tuesday, 23 June.

At about 11.30am, police on patrol stopped to investigate a blue Polo parked on the side of the road. As they got out their vehicle, they noticed four men approaching on foot.

On seeing the police, the men started shooting. The police returned fire, injuring one of the men, while the rest attempted to flee on foot.

They ran towards the Hull Road bridge while shooting at the officers, when a second man was shot. Despite concerted efforts by police officers to track down the remaining two men, they escaped.

The two injured men, both aged 28, were arrested and taken to hospital under police guard. Each was found in possession of a 9mm gun with the serial number filed off. They will appear in court for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.

“Motorists using the N2 near Higginson Highway and Lamontville must be cautious and vigilant at all times. The management of Montclair SAPS commends the members for the arrests and recovery of the firearms,” said communications officer, W/O Poobalan Marimuthu.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye-Ngobeni also commended the members. “We are committed towards ensuring that all those who break the law are brought to justice. We will continue to work hard to make sure KwaZulu-Natal remains a safe province,” she said.
