Police stations warn of crime increases

Police issue warnings to South Durban communities.

BRIGHTON Beach SAPS warns residents of an increase in housebreaking and house robberies in Fynnlands, Grosvenor and Oceanview, while Montclair SAPS warns of an increase in theft from motor vehicles within gated communties.

Brighton Beach communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said investigations show force was not used to gain entry into homes in most cases. She urges home owners to remove keys from doors after locking and not to keep them on tables or racks, but rather in cupboards or drawers. “We also ask that handbags and wallets be locked away and not placed in plain sight,” said Capt Le Roux.

Most cases have been reported as occurring from 6pm to 8pm and 3am to 5am. “We urge community members not to challenge housebreakers or robbers. Do not place your life or those of your loved ones at risk. Hand over whatever is demanded and comply with every request as these criminals will not hesitate to harm you,” she said.

She adds that in some instances, cars were also taken. “Know your vehicle registration number, make and model. This will help the 10111 operator to circulate your vehicle promptly,” she added.

She asks that residents contact police and their security companies if they see suspicious individuals or vehicle in their neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, Montclair SAPS communications officer, W/O Poobalan Marimuthu said there has been an increase in theft out of and from motor vehicles in gated complexes.

“The public is urged not to leave valuables like cell phones, laptops and wallets visible in their motor vehicles. Body corporates must ensure that the gated complex is monitored and report any suspicious persons or motor vehicles, entering or exiting, to the police. It is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure the safeguarding of their property,” he said.

He urges residents to be alert when driving, entering or exiting their driveways as many attacks happen at these points. “Drivers should refrain from parking for long periods in the evening, on pavements and in secluded spots,” he said.
