Bayhead blitz nets 27 trucks

Police get tough on trucks.

TWENTY-SEVEN trucks were impounded and 78 drivers were arrested in a recent Bayhead blitz by the municipality and Metro Police.

The operation initiated by eThekwini Municipality aimed at clamping down on trucks that contravene road traffic laws.

Head of Metro Police, Commissioner Eugene Nzama said the operation was necessitated by the increase in the number of accidents and illegally parked trucks.

“Twenty-seven trucks were impounded for various offences, particularly in relation to roadworthiness and licensing violations. We arrested 78 drivers, including those with warrants of arrest for outstanding fines. Eight of those drivers were found to be in the country illegally and were processed for deportation. We subsequently charged their employers for authorising them to drive their vehicles on public roads,” said Metro Police Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi.

Some R227,850 in outstanding fines and warrants was also recovered.
