Man gets five years for petrol bombing

His 33-year and 36-year-old accomplices were also arrested

A JACOBS man has been given a five-year suspended sentence for throwing a petrol bomb at a Clairwood business on Sunday, 31 May.

During a strike by Tropic Plastics employees, a 26-year-old man from Jacobs Hostel hurled a homemade petrol bomb over a wall into the business at about 10.20pm. The ensuing fire was extinguished by a security guard.

Working with Peritum Network, Brighton Beach SAPS’ Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Looy was able to identify the man through CCTV footage and he was arrested on Wednesday, 3 June in Lansdowne Road.

He pleaded guilty to possession of a petrol bomb, for which he received a five year suspended sentence and malicious damage to property, for which he was given a R5,000 fine or six months’ imprisonment.

His 33-year and 36-year-old accomplices were also arrested and are currently in Westville Prison, awaiting a bail application at the Durban Regional Court on Friday, 3 July on charges of conspiracy to commit arson and arson.
