Steve’s team win midweek league

Unfortunately the same success could not be claimed in the 6th round of the men’s interclub league or the womens Wyn Cup League.

HEARTIEST congratulations are due to the Wanderers Bowling Club men’s midweek league team of Steve Van Rooyen, Richard Hendicott, Graham Funnell and Eric Redman.

They pulled off a first for Wanderers by winning the midweek league 23-14 at Hillary against a Durban side.

Eric and Graham set up a solid base from the front throughout the game, giving their back rank something of an easy ride and putting enormous pressure on the Durban side. Well done to them.

Unfortunately the same success could not be claimed in the 6th round of the men’s interclub league or the women’s Wynn Cup league. The A, B and D sides all only achieved two points with the C and E sides both losing 0-5. The A side got their points from a narrow win by Arnie and co against Hillcrest at home. Steve and Richard both lost their matches, Steve’s side conceding an eight in the process. Erratic performances by the front rank seemed to be the main problem there.

The B side has Lofty Cawthorne to thank for their two points, getting a seven in the latter stages to seal their fate. Both Dennis and Jimmy lost – Dennis by a single point. Chris Klopper and Keith Wild both lost against Hillcrest away for the C side and Errol Pienaar and co achieved the two points for the D side against Hillary away, with Eric Kitchenbrand’s side losing on that occasion. For the E side both Colin Howes and Colin Nicholas lost against Durban away.

The women got a proper thumping. Actual details will not be necessary to report.

Both the men’s interclub league and the women’s Wynn Cup resume next Saturday.

Members are to enter the upcoming Mothwa tournament to be staged at Durban Wanderers on 16 June. The format of play is any combination fours with good prizes. Advise either Yvonne at Stella Park or Jeff Bolt if you wish to enter.

Last Friday’s snowball of R600 was not won as Laura Simmons was not present. The various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack Tommy Simpkins; rolled beef Jackie Freeman; pork roast Des Demmer; rump steak Dan Paruk; chicken pack Cedina Swanepoel; chicken Loffie Bester.
