Seminar on colonial statues

It is open to the public.

FOLLOWING a recent spate of sporadic incidents of vandalism of colonial statues and other monuments in the country, eThekwini Municipality’s libraries and heritage department will hold a one day seminar on ‘Historical statues and monuments: To dismantle or to Keep?’

It is open to the public. It will look at the role of colonial and apartheid era monuments in a democratic dispensation. Experts from various fields will give presentations on how they see these statues and monuments playing a role in moving the country forward. Members of the public will also have an opportunity to voice their opinions.

The presenters are Gregory Ontong of the South African Heritage Resources Agency; Dithobe Mosana, UKZN SRC president; Adv Monwabisi Mancotywa, chief executive officer of the National Heritage Council, Prof Ashwin Desai of the University of Johannesburg and Prof Sabine Marschall of UKZN.
