Four hikes this Freedom Day weekend

Hikers get to enjoy two bumper hikes due to the public holiday on Freedom Day, Monday, 27 April

HIKERS from Durban Ramblers Club will set out on four hikes this weekend, due to the Freedom Day holiday on Monday, 27 April.

On Saturday, 25 April hikers will travel to the Alverstone Conservancy.

Hikers will take in grasslands and hike up and down dale, with some game viewing. Entrance costs R20. Meet at the Assegay Hotel at 1.30pm to drive to Alverston at 1.45pm or meet at the conservancy at 1.45pm. There will be a post-hike braai at the boma.

The hike is graded two, moderate.

On Sunday, 26 April, hikers will visit Killarney Rockeries. Call hike leader Philip Swart on 031-465-2776 or 072-606-6599. This moderate 8km hike includes a visit to the waterfall. Meet at Union Main in Pinetown for a 7am sharp departure or meet at 8am at Herb Farm gate. Follow the N3 to Cato Ridge, and take the turn-off at exit 53. Do not go into town, but carry on straight for about 3kms, taking the right turn into Killarney Valley. Follow gravel road and lookout for farm gate D27, turn right into Herb Farm. Petrol sharing costs R25.

This 8km hike is graded two.

An outing to Bosch Hoek will be led by Francois Marais. Call him on 083-983-8007 to join the Pietermaritzburg Ramblers for a full day hike at Boschoek.

Hikers will meet at 8am at Aird Farm, Petrustroom, and will enjoy refreshments on the stoep at Aird Farm after the hike. This hike is graded four.

On the same day, there is a hike at Inanda Dam with leader Werner. Call him on 084-206-7836 to confirm your attendance.

Hikers will visit the Inanda Dam, which is a Msinzi Reserve, for a morning hike with an organised braai for lunch. Meet at the reserve at 10am, as the walk starts at 10.30am.

Directions:

Continue on the M13, turn at the Hillcrest off-ramp, and then into Old Main Road for about 1km until the Old Main Road/Inanda Road intersection. At this point, turn right into Inanda Road, and travel for about 2km until you reach a signboard to Inanda Dam on your left. Take it and continue on the M57W for about 12kms until the main entrance gate to Inanda Dam.
