NSRI pulls stranded anglers off Pelican Island

Group of six, aged 7 to 59, got stuck there during Spring high tide

A group of fishermen who got caught on Pelican Island in the middle of Durban harbour had to be aided by the National Sea Rescue Intitute (NSRI) at about 4.45pm on Sunday, 5 April.

NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from six local fishermen reporting to be on Pelican Island, near to the Bluff Yacht Club, and cut off from the mainland by the Spring high tide.

They had walked across to Pelican Island during low tide to fish before being caught there by the Spring high tide and although in no imminent danger, they requested the NSRI’s assistance to get back to the mainland rather than wait until much later before they would be able to walk back at the next low tide. NSRI obliged without any hesitation.

The Durban volunteer crew launched the sea rescue craft Megan II and on arrival, all six fishermen, locals aged between 7 and 59, were taken aboard and transported to the mainland, where once delivered no further assistance was required.

The men had reportedly only caught one small fish during their fishing trip.
