Stainbank upgrades visitor facilities

The reserve is open from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday.

KENNETH Stainbank Nature Reserve received five new picnic tables and four benches to help improve visitor facilities at the reserve on Wednesday, 25 March.

To produce the furniture, 2,000 plastic two litre milk bottles were used for one bench, and 4,000 two litre milk bottles for one picnic table by Enviro Timbers in Pietermaritzburg.
Fundraising for this projected started two years ago after new signage was erected at the reserve.

Kenneth Stainbank’s conservation manager, John Dives says the reserve’s honorary officers play a key role in giving up their time to do internal fund raising. To do so, the reserve hosts events like trail runs, BMG Stainbank Cup and Christmas carols. Every second Saturday the reserve hosts a guided walk where the public can experience nature at the reserve. “We would like to thank visitor Peter O’Leary for his donation of R10,000 made in December last year,” he said.

When asked why people should visit Stainbank, Dives said: “It gets people back to nature. People have developed a fast lifestyle. We seem to have lost touch with nature. This is a good way to spend quality time with family.”
The honorary officers would like to see three more picnic tables and seven benches added for visitors’ benefit.
Members of the community can also donate a bench with a plaque in memory of loved-ones. If you would like to donate to Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, contact John Dives on 083-423-0843 or 031-469-2807.

The reserve is open from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday.
