Truck conductor shot in the back

It is alleged the bus driver became verbally abusive towards the truck occupants.

A TRUCK conductor was shot in the back after an altercation with a bus driver on Sirdar Road in Clairwood on Thursday, 26 March.

At about 8pm, a truck driver and his two conductors were driving along Sirdar Road when their path was obstructed by a bus in an area where construction work was being done.

The truck driver complied with the request of the construction crew to reverse. During this time, it is alleged the bus driver became verbally abusive towards the truck occupants.

While the driver was reversing the truck, two shots were fired at it. One of the conductors was hit in his back in the shoulder area. The truck driver drove to the closest garage to ask for help.

Once alerted to the incident, Sergeant Robert Jooste and Constables Mohamed Rasool and Pule Ngekha from the Brighton Beach cluster anti-hijacking task team began their search for the shooter. They were able to track the 26-year-old bus driver to Archary Road, where he was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The officers found a 9mm Star pistol, magazine and six 9mm rounds in the bus. It was later determined that he had a licence for the gun, which has been sent for ballistics analysis to see if it has been used in any other crimes.

Brighton Beach SAPS management thanks the Brighton Beach cluster anti-hijacking task team for their swift response, apprehension of the suspect and recovery of the firearm.
