Bluff actor among Passion Play’s 150-strong cast

Ressa hopes people will watch the play and “realise the great love Jesus has for all people.”

THE Bluff’s Maruo Ressa is one of the 150-plus cast members volunteering their time to bring Durban’s 14th Passion Play to life in April.

The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild will present the Durban Passion Play, directed by Dawn Haynes and Tanya Conradie, at the Playhouse Drama Theatre from 1 to 19 April with the aim of depicting the meaning of Easter.

Ressa, who will be performing in the Passion Play for the third time, plays the part of Ezekiel. With only high school theatre experience, Ressa said he enjoys taking to the stage. “I very much enjoy the challenge of acting and wish I had the time to take part in other productions. I thank Dawn and all the committee members for their dedication and hard work,” he said.

The first Passion Play in Durban was performed in 1952 with special permission granted by the mayor and community of Oberammergau in Bavaria to the Durban Catholic Players’ Guild and it has been staged every five years since. A highlight this year is a special performance for the hearing impaired on Sunday, 12 April at 2.30pm.

Ressa hopes people will watch the play and “realise the great love Jesus has for all people.”
