Shots exchanged in sweet shop shoot-out

Shoot-out at sweet factory shop in Jacobs.

FOUR robbers escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, following a shoot-out with the owner of a shop in Jacobs on Tuesday, 17 February.

At about 4.30pm the four armed men pretended to be shoppers at a sweet factory shop in Jacobs Road. As two of them moved towards the cash point, with items they were pretending to buy, one of them pulled out a gun and attacked a clerk.

The four men then forced the shoppers and staff to lie on the floor while they stole money from the tills.

One staff member was able to escape without notice and ran to the owner of the shop, who was in the back office. As the thieves were escaping, the owner caught up with them and opened fire, which they returned, as they fled in a silver Jetta.

During the robbery, one person suffered a head injury from being struck with the butt of a gun and two others were hurt as they fled the shop. No-one was shot, but police found bullet holes in three cars.

Cartridges found at the shop were sent for ballistics analysis, to determine if the guns had been used in any other crimes and a search for the men is ongoing.

Anyone with information on these men should call the Brighton Beach Detective branch commander on 031-451-8002 or 031-451-8093. All callers will be treated anonymously.
