Onwards and upwards for Maths, Science School

EMSS programme successes.

WITH a continued upward trend in results, the Engen Math and Science School (EMSS) programme saw a pass rate of 99% for its 2014 class.

At an extravagant ceremony on Saturday, 14 February, KZN EMSS pupils, many of whom come from poor backgrounds, were rewarded for their hard work.

“In the almost 30 year-history of the EMSS programme, no other group has achieved an average pass rate of 99%. This, in comparison to the national average of 75.8%, is spectacular. The significance of this could really be understood when one looks back and sees the general upward trend in the EMSS pass rate over time,” said Engen corporate social investment manager, Mntu Nduvane.

Out of the 99%, 70% of the pupils attained a bachelor pass, 29% above the national average. The top three KZN pupils, Ngcebo Gwala, Mishaal Jagdew and Sikhonzi Hadebe, all achieved distinctions in English, maths and physical science.

“But the real winners are the many pupils who get to pursue their dreams, many of whom have had to face socio-economic challenges during their academic year. We are proud of all our graduates and wish them the best in their upcoming studies and careers,” said Nduvane.
