SMME business up for grabs.

Local businessmen stand a chance at winning a business.

THE competition is on for locals to win a block-making business provided by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office and Talisman Tool Hire Durban South.

“For 2015, Talisman will have one major social responsibility project for the year – we want to give away a turnkey small block-making business,” said director, Ernest Jonck.

The aim of the project is to advance small business development in the area. “We decided to turn the sponsorship from Talisman into a SMME development project to be run as a competition, where entries will be encouraged from small businesses, organisations or co-operatives who will be invited to submit a proposal or motivation explaining how they intend using the prize,” said SDB ABM manager, Eurakha Singh.

An adjudication panel will judge the proposals and the winner will be given a block-making machine, training and business leadership, coaching and mentorship programmes. “All the programmes attached to the prize are aimed at ensuring the winning business is viable and sustainable,” said SDB ABM local economic development co-ordinator, Fanele Masombuka.

Some of the stakeholders who have come on board with the project are Natal Portland Cement, the Small Enterprise Development Agency, the Durban Chamber of Commerce, eThekwini Municipality’s business support unit and ActionCOACH. “Besides giving birth to a brand new entrepreneur, this project will also hopefully give rise to a series of other opportunities and projects and this is why we at NPC are excited to be part of it,” said Natal Portland Cement’s Smangele Mbeje.

Details for the competition are to be finalised soon and will be published at a later date. For information call Fanele Masombuka on 031-451-8900.
