Crow rescues stranded monkey

Using pieces of fruit, they were able to successfully lure the hungry and exhausted monkey into a trap box that they had managed to drag onto the rooftop.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) rescued a vervet monkey from the roof of a building on Thursday, 22 January.

A member of the public alerted Crow after it was spotted on the rooftop of a high rise building in Gillespie Street, South Beach
It’s believed the monkey had been stranded for several days. Crow staff and volunteers rushed to the scene where they were greeted by a large and visibly distressed adult male monkey. Using pieces of fruit, they were able to successfully lure the hungry and exhausted monkey into a trap box that they had managed to drag onto the rooftop.

The monkey is now recuperating at the Crow centre and will be released in a safe location in a few days time. As to how and why the monkey was stuck on top of the rooftop in the first place, it’s a bit of a mystery as Crow Clinic nurse, Kelly explains; “It’s hard to say how or why he got himself stuck up there. It’s possible he got separated from his local troop which does happen from time to time, or he may have escaped from someone in the area who was keeping him illegally as a pet, for bush meat, or muti. I’m just really glad we were able to get him and that his ordeal is over.”
