Auditions look to garner young dance talent

It is an opportunity to join local academy, Dance Movement.

POPULAR local dance academy, Dance Movement invites youth between the ages of five and 20-years-old to showcase their talents at a dance audition on Saturday, 24 January.

It is an opportunity for talented dancers to be chosen to join the academy. The audition will be hosted at Transhaven Centre, 51 Treasure Beach Road at 8am.
Dance Movement is administered by NPO, Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation which started the project seven years ago to create a platform for disadvantaged youth in the South Durban Basin.

Headed by award-winning choreographer, Jarryd Watson, Dance Movement offers training in hip hop, break dancing, contemporary and other styles for passionate dancers to explore. “I believe and always encourage young dancers to know as many styles of dancing as this will help them to have diversity as a dancer and that is important to their career,” he said.

The Dance Movement project has stuck to its vision and mission of creating opportunities for dancers over the past seven years, which includes international travels to Scotland, England and the USA for prestigious global dance events, professional productions and the annual Durban Dance Movement festival.

“Even though the arts industry is tough to operate in especially with the lack of funding and support, Dance Movement has managed to successfully achieve many accolades and 2015 promises to be another exciting year for the troupe.”

A shining example and promising dancer at Dance Movement is Lindsley Augustine who joined the project in 2010. Since then he has received numerous awards including most improved, second runner-up best male award in 2011 and in 2014 at the Durban Dance Movement festival he was awarded the best male dancer.

He has also represented South Africa with the troupe at the UDO world championships in England, where he placed fifth with the quad group. Lindsley continues to dance with Dance Movement as a training company dancer. “I’m so grateful that I have achieved my goals and thank Jarryd for the opportunities given to us.”
