Weekend backpackers to hike to Pholela Cave

There is also a weekend backpacking excursion planned on Saturday, 10 January and Sunday, 11 January.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club resumes its hiking schedule for the year this weekend.

On Saturday, 10 January hikers will take a hike to Pigeon Valley.

Call hike leader Linda on 083-353-8319 and meet at Stella Sports Club, 175 Helen Joseph Road (formerly Davenport Road) at 1.45pm. There will be some street walking to Pigeon Valley with steep hills going up to St Augustine’s Hospital and the university. This 6km hike is graded two, easy to moderate.

There is also a weekend backpacking excursion planned on Saturday, 10 January and Sunday, 11 January. This is a joint Ramblers/MBC and Midlands weekend to Pholela Cave.

Call hike leader David Tighe on 031- 464-9247 or on 076-028-0708. Meet at Himeville Hotel at 8am or Cobham reception at 8.30am. Hikers will overnight at Pholela Cave in the Cobham area, 14kms from parking. Cost is R65 per person per night. The return route is 16kms via Lakes Cave, Whaleback Ridge, Siphongweni Rock and Shelter National Monument. The hike is graded three, or strenuous.

Back in Durban, on Sunday, 11 January hikers take a hike to Berea Parks. Call hike leader Jenny on 084-952-0622 to confirm before the Sunday hike. Meet and park at the Sutton Park pool, so that anyone who’d like to can have a swim at the end of the hike, in time for a prompt 8am start. Take along money for a coffee stop along the way and snacks for a picnic lunch after the hike.

This is graded two, moderate and covers a distance of about 16km.
