Drowning child’s mom rants about wanting her dead

Bluff boy rescues toddler from drowning.

AFTER rescuing a drowning toddler from the churning waves at Durban’s North Beach, Niels Decaluwe was shocked when the supposed mother ranted about wanting to kill the child on Sunday, 28 December.

At about 2pm, 16-year-old Decaluwe, an avid surfer, was enjoying the waves at the popular beachfront when he was waved down by a fisherman on a pier and alerted to something in the water. The 16-year-old quickly realised what he was seeing was a young child, about three or four-years-old, flailing in the current.

The girl was quickly sinking, but Decaluwe was able to reach her and pull her to safety on his surf board. Believing the child had fallen in by accident, he brought her to shore to search for the girl’s family. Instead he found a woman ranting about wanting to hang her.

It is not yet known if she is the child’s mother, but the 28-year-old woman allegedly threw the toddler into the water from the pier in an attempt to kill her. She was arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday, 31 December on charges of attempted murder. A bail hearing has been set for later this month.
