Former Island artist exhibits

Art exhibit features Salisbury Island teachers life works.

THE work of former Salisbury Island College teacher and artist, Jean Powell, is on display at the Durban Art Gallery Circular Gallery until 27 January.

The exhibited work, curated by Robert Brusse, includes some of her botanic studies, calligraphy and fabric, traditional graphic, vitreous enamel and etched glass works.

Much of the work on display shows an understanding of women in a male dominated world. Powell, who was born in Kenya on 11 February 1927, trained in Britain and worked in Kenya before coming to South Africa where she taught at various schools, including in the fine arts department at the Salisbury Island College, before it closed and was replaced by the University of Durban, Westville.

Best known as an active committee member of the KZN Society of Arts, the Friends of the Durban Art Gallery, among other groups, Powell produced acclaimed enamel works over the years. The Durban Art Gallery is open on Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 4pm and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free.
