Tennis ace takes club to new level

Brighton Tennis Club turns 50.

AS Brighton Tennis Club celebrates its golden anniversary, ex-professional tennis player, Natalie Grandin has taken it to new heights.

The international tennis champion, who retired from the sport professionally earlier this year, had focused her attention on improving the health, skills and confidence of local tennis up-and-comers. Since she joined the club, the women’s doubles team won the first division and has been promoted to the super league – the first team from the club to do so in its 50-year history.

Grandin played professionally for 15 years and competed in the Federation Cup 36 times for South Africa. She, along with other club members including Vicky Horstman – one of the founding members – celebrate 50 years of Brighton Tennis Club in the hopes of inspiring future tennis aces. Brighton Tennis Club has seen a boom in the number of youngsters taking up racquets as Grandin and her sisters started the junior development tennis squad that trains every Wednesday afternoon, with the aim of seeing more locals compete internationally.

The club encourages new players, with a social club on Monday and Friday mornings and weekend club on Saturdays. Coaches are available.
