Police find gun hidden in car.

A GUN with 10 bullets was seized when police arrested a man in Jacobs on Monday, 3 November.

While on patrol in the area at about 1.30pm, Wentworth SAPS crime prevention’s Constables Mbongwa and Dyido, led by Constable N Cele, received a call about a man behaving suspiciously around a white Mazda hatchback in Maryhill Road.

When they arrived they noticed a man move to the vehicle and hide something under the back seat, lock the car and step away. The trio of policemen approached the man and asked to search his car, where Cst Cele found a 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off, containing 10 live bullets with 9mm Luger inscribed on the magazine.

The 36-year-old man, who was originally from Eshowe, was arrested and his gun and ammunition seized. He appeared in Wentworth Court on Tuesday, 4 November and was jailed at Westville Prison awaiting his second court date for a bail application on Thursday, 13 November.

The members of the crime prevention team are commended by the management of Wentworth SAPS for the arrest and recovery of the firearm and ammunition. “A warning – the police will continue to stop and search vehicles and people suspicious of carrying illegal firearms and any other dangerous weapons or drugs. We urge the community to be our eyes and ears and report the crime happening in our patrol area,” said Wentworth SAP communications officer, Lieutenant Gumede.
