WITH its coal supplies under threat after a silo collapsed at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga on Saturday, Eskom has warned that load shedding may be inevitable for the entire country.

The silo, which was found to be cracked and then subsequently collapsed, housed over 10,000 tons of coal.
The incident impacts coal supplies to all six units at the power station, resulting in the power station now operating at a reduced capacity of 1,300MW. Eskom engineers are investigating the cause of the incident.
“We urge our customers to switch off all appliances during the outage and only restore as needed when power does return. This will assist to prevent nuisance tripping and extended outages,” said eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

Power capacity was strained on Eskom’s grid resulting in a mass outage across much of the city on Sunday, 2 November.
