Hikers to regale in sights of swallows, rockeries

On Sunday, 9 November take a hike to Killarney Rockeries.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club’s weekend hiking programme for the second weekend in November sees them hike to see the barn swallows at Mount Moreland on Saturday, 8 November.

Call hike leader Jenny on 084-952-0622.Take along a R20 donation to the conservancy per person, of which R10 is for the conservancy and R10 for a braai. Take a chair, drinks and things to braai. Binoculars are essential for viewing the swallows. If it is raining, call the hike leader to check if it is still on. This is a 10km walk around the area, right up to the fence of King Shaka Airport. Hikers will then have a braai before going down to view the swallows, which arrive just before sunset.

This hike is graded 2, moderate.

Meet at Union Main Centre, Old Main Road, Pinetown in time for a prompt 7am departure for Cato Ridge. The suggested petrol-sharing is R28 per person. Use exit 53 off-ramp from N3, then left, carry on straight to Thomas Ammann N27 Herb Farm Cato Ridge. The hike starts at 8am at the herb farm.

The club trusts that they will have the old horse-cart trail re-opened as a hiking trail to the Umlazi River ravine, then back via the rockeries and rock-art on the way to the car park. This is an arid trail so take along ample water and snacks for a hike of about four hours.

This 12km hike is graded three, strenuous.
