Armed robbers arrested

Police arrest five knife-wielding thieves within days.

FIVE men wanted for armed robbery were taken off the streets yesterday, 28 October through the diligent efforts of the Brighton Beach cluster task team and others.

On Thursday, 16 October at about 6.20pm the five armed men held a Magwaza Maphalala Street supermarket owner at knifepoint before making off with goods and groceries. An exhaustive investigation led to the quick arrest of two of the five in Ladysmith over the weekend.

Further inquiries led the Brighton Beach cluster task team, Durban Flying Squad, Durban K9 unit and Umbilo detectives to a building in Dalton Road in Congela, where the remaining men aged from 25 to 28 were hiding.

“Criminals need to know they cannot hide forever, as we will eventually find them. During our festive season operations, detectives will be conducting regular raids for wanted suspects,” said provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

The first two men appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 27 October and were placed in police custody. The rest will appear in the same court soon on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
